Project Goal

To grow GIS at ONEOK, Inc. from a departmental-based solution to an Enterprise Strategic model. For many years, GIS data was authored and stored within each department, often resulting in multiple versions of asset data. The goal was to establish a centralized GIS and realize a shared vision across all departments. This comprised of removing redundant data, improving data quality and internal GIS workflows, and streamlining GIS technologies. Next, the GIS team began to understand how to enhance operational workflows. This involved the implementation of Portal, improving collaboration across the organization, the implementation of field data collection app, and the development of web apps made available to decision-makers. Finally, as the GIS team progresses to an Enterprise model, focus will be on improving business processes and decision-making, data management and analysis, field mobility, and integrating seamlessly with enterprise and mission-critical systems within ONEOK.

Business Problem Solved

By merging all departmental GIS groups into one team, we’ve been able to “do more with less”. A common database platform was established, streamlining the tools & resources required to manage GIS data. Understanding we can only be as good as our data, we’ve begun to put GIS in the hands of field personnel to collect & correct data, utilizing Collector for ArcGIS. By implementing Portal for ArcGIS, we’ve opened up a world of possibilities through data sharing and collaboration. Examples of how we’ve helped improve operational workflows include an Earthquake notification app that uses ArcGIS GeoEvent Server to monitor & filter real-time earthquake data near our assets, immediately notifying appropriate personnel; a Weather app that utilizes the Spatiotemporal Big Data Store to consume, analyze & store millions of weather-related records in real time to visualize and provide our gas control and optimization teams the ability to make quicker decisions concerning gas flow; and many more.

Technology Implemented

As part of streamlining GIS technologies, we made the decision to primarily use Esri’s suite of applications at ONEOK. While there will always be a few exceptions, our confidence in tools, such as Portal for ArcGIS, Web AppBuilder for ArcGIS, ArcGIS GeoEvent Server, Spatiotemporal Big Data Store, AppStudio for ArcGIS, Collector for ArcGIS, Survey123 for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Explorer, Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Maps for Office, and more, will only make us a stronger GIS team to deliver the needs of our organization.
