Project Goal

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has provided maps and other geospatial information to its customers for more than two decades. GIS technology has evolved rapidly, and the recent years have seen a fundamental shift in the perception and implementation of this technology. Citizens now expect not just paper maps but geospatial information products that are interactive, intuitive, accurate, powerful and yet simple to use on any device of their choice.

The agency implemented an Enterprise GIS system to support the growing needs and challenges related to the management of the state’s fish, wildlife, park, and outdoor recreation resources. The goal was to create a system that would help us effectively manage datasets in a central location, promote collaboration, and provide a platform that would help easily create and disseminate applications for internal and public use.

Business Problem Solved

The enterprise system has provided a centralized data repository of GIS data, eliminating silos across district offices. We now have the ability to disseminate important information related to fishing, hunting, camping, and recreational atlas at a rapid pace. Our constituents have access to authoritative geospatial data in near real time, via map services through the open data portal. We can now quickly configure apps like Collector for ArcGIS, Survey123 for ArcGIS and geo-form to set up field data collection and visualize the information using dashboards. Our maps & apps help our constituents get the information they need in an easy, visually pleasing format to plan their outdoor recreation experience. We have automated some of our business processes, improving efficiency and migrated the legacy maps created in Photoshop to GIS, which has made updating them very easy. The enriched apps & maps have given us information that is easy to consume and allowed for informed decisions.
