Project Goal

The mission of Citizen Science GIS is to work with communities across the globe to visualize local knowledge through GIS, drones, and collaboration. We have two core projects: 1) The Open Reef Mapping Society designed to map all islands of the Belize Barrier Reef with drones, Drone2Map for ArcGIS, and citizen science and 2) The National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates Site in Hopkins, Belize where we use community GIS and citizen science to map local knowledge about flooding and marine debris. With our mission at the center of all projects we undertake, our core values include the following: a) respecting and appreciating all forms of knowledge; b) creating meaningful and authentic collaboration between academic and nonacademic partners; c) developing easily accessible technology to share the important stories and knowledge of communities; d) fostering curiosity for learning, education, and engagement.

Business Problem Solved

We are research and education focused, so we emphasize implementation of community-based research tools. This includes a focus on ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Open Data sites, ArcMap, Collector for ArcGIS, Survey123 for ArcGIS, and Drone2Map for ArcGIS. We use each of these platforms to collect, share, and analyze spatial data in Belize, a developing country with limited, shared, open geospatial data. We work with Belizeans community partners and the University of Belize to create shared, open datasets. Our goal is to showcase the power of GIS across organizations to stimulate discovery and citizen science research and learning opportunities for all of society.

Technology Implemented

We use several Esri products, but most notably Drone2Map, Collector, Survey123, ArcGIS Online, Esri Story Maps, and Open Data.
