Project Goal

In order to better meet the Agency’s responsibilities related to the protection of public health and the environment, EPA developed an environmental justice (EJ) mapping and screening tool called EJSCREEN. It is based on nationally consistent data and an approach that combines environmental and demographic indicators in maps and reports.

Business Problem Solved

This tool provides nationally consistent scores for any geography, including user-defined, in the United States so that the level of environmental justice in a neighborhood in Los Angeles can be compared with the same metrics for an area in downtown Atlanta. This made the business of addressing environmental justice across the nation possible for the EPA. This tool was released to the public so that local organizations could use the data in the tool to fuel their own grassroots activism which is critical to achieving equity across the nation.
