Business Problem Solved

Initially we established a set of graduation requirements in geography that expect middle and high school students to use GIS in the analysis of a local problem. We then secured a statewide site license from Esri (prior to K-12 ConnectED) so that all schools would have access to GIS software. MAGE has offered a variety of professional development opportunities for teachers interested in GIS, including Saturday workshops, GeoFest (annual conference) and incorporating GIS in summer institutes. Since 2014 the Minnesota Department of Education and MN GIS/LIS Consortium have partnered in providing over 70 K12 GIS teacher workshops and five grant-funded multi-day workshops. We also began an annual “Educator Day” at the GIS/LIS Consortium October conference. In 2016 we launched a statewide middle and high school GIS map competition. This has been a huge hit with students and has served as a prototype for the current Esri sponsored National GIS mapping contest. Next step: K-12 1-stop website.
