Valley Metro

Project Goal

The goal for this project was to develop an authoritative source for public transit ridership information that can be used by Valley Metro planners and staff but also accessible to the public utilizing the ArcGIS platform. Previously, the only means of ascertaining any form of ridership information was a spreadsheet that aggregated all ridership to the entire route. ArcGIS Online and more specifically Web App Builder for ArcGIS was chosen as the platform to distribute the ridership information because the application can be designed as a convenient and user-friendly application.

Business Problem Solved

One of the most requested transit related datasets from Valley Metro is the number of riders that access a specific bus stop or light-rail station. However, this could be a momentous task with roughly four to five million public transit riders per month. The time that was needed to fulfill one of the inquiries could take several hours. Not only is the time needed to complete the query a hindrance if the request is time sensitive, but only GIS trained staff could complete the inquiries. With the new Ridership Data Portal application, any person can find out the average daily ridership for any bus stop or series of bus stops at any time

Development Team Biography

Cory Whittaker:
Graduated from Arizona State University with a Master's Degree in GIS. Current GIS Manager for Valley Metro, RPTA since 2013. GIS Specialist for the City of Mesa from 2005 to 2013.

Joe Gregory:
Graduated from Arizona State University with a Master's Degree in GIS. Current Service Analyst for Valley Metro, RPTA since 2014. Geospatial professional at various companies since 2000.
