The City of Ames and Story County, Iowa joined forces to establish a powerful GIS, a system used to distribute GIS over the Internet, perform sophisticated analysis, and enhance customer service.

Business Problem The City of Ames and Story County Iowa has joined forces to establish a GIS that serves citizens through improved internal government processes and the distribution GIS information via the World Wide Web. With limited financial resources, the strong organized partnership between these government organizations has produced an invaluable tool that has and continues to improve the services they provide to their customers.
The joint GIS program has paid many dividends to the two agencies. It has produced very detailed and comprehensive studies such as urban fringe analysis, annexation cost/benefit studies, emergency response models, better communication methods, interactive Internet accessibility to GIS information, and much more.
The cooperative team effort has also grown to include sharing information with other agencies such as the Department of Natural Resources, Iowa State University, Boone County, The State of Iowa, FEMA, and many private and public organizations across the United States. By working in close communication and sharing the responsibilities of GIS, Story County and the City of Ames have been working hand-in-hand to build and continue to improve upon a tool that will enhance service and productivity, and in return increase the value of the community they serve. Through this cooperative effort, GIS has become an essential resource that will continue to guide and inform City and County leaders, and provide them will a tool that will further enhance the City of Ames and Story County, Iowa of tomorrow. Technology Implemented By a cooperative agreement, and close relationships between Information Services Staff and GIS staff, the City of Ames and Story County, Iowa share continuously strive to parallel the same technology resources. The GIS platform at these two organizations is built on ArcView 3.X, ArcInfo 8.1, ArcView Spatial Analyst Extension, ArcView 3-D Extension, ArcView Network Analyst Extension, ArcFM, Windows NT 4.0 workstations, a Novell network and servers, and an AS400 mainframe. The City of Ames also utilizes a NT server to manage its ArcFM related data. Furthermore, the City of Ames and Story County utilize the Internet services of a private firm to distribute GIS information across the Internet.
