Business Problem To create accessible and focused GIS web applications that easily allow residents and employees to integrate, maintain, query and study Evanstons geographically related information. One application is called "About my place". The map image was removed from the user interface and geoprocessing is done in the background based on an address entered by the user. A map can be rendered but it is not necessary for the user to use a map to retrieve map-based information. The simplified the users experience and made it our most popular mapping application. Technology Implemented We have a strong desire to keep the complexity of the applications on the server and present an extremely simple user interface to the client. This was accomplished with the use of multiple servers to house the supporting web servers, mapping applications and databases. All requests funnel through a central HP-UX Unix web server, which in turn proxies requests to specialized supporting servers. Mapping applications are run on a Windows 2000 server using MapObjects IMS and ArcIMS. Applications are created utilizing IMS products in conjunction with Visual Basic, ASP and Dream Weaver. Geographic data is stored as shape files and attribute data is stored in an Oracle database. Development Team Evanston GIS and IS Divsions Development Team Biography Pat Keegan, GIS Manager
