Business Problem The WV GIS Technical Center in the Department of Geology and Geography at West Virginia University provides direction and leadership to users of geographic information systems (GIS) within the State of West Virginia. Besides assisting the State with strategic planning, development and implementation of statewide mapping guidelines, the Technical Center also conducts research and provides education towards improvement of geographic information technologies
The West Virginia GIS Technical Center also provides free public access to vital geographic information. Through the centers Web site (http://wvgis.wvu.edu) users have access to one of the largest collections of geospatial data in the state. Users can log on and retrieve geographic information on a wide range of information including digital photography, river and stream data, road networks, and cultural information. In addition to making digital geographic data accessible to the public, the Technical Center creates geospatial data to be included in the West Virginia Spatial Data Infrastructure.
The centers GIS has also been employed in several state projects. The GIS was used to find environmentally sound locations for high-power transmission lines, create maps for the West Virginia University campus, and convert Monongalia County tax parcel information into digital archives.
