Business Problem

The New Jersey Office of Geographic Information Systems (OGIS) was formally established by Governors Executive Order in January 2001. Since 1999, the OGIS has functioned within New Jerseys Office of Information Technology where it coordinates the use of GIS technology among state agencies; and promotes the development of a statewide spatial data infrastructure.

The primary challenge for OGIS is to incorporate the power of GIS and the value of spatial data into the daily business functions of NJ government.

Technology Implemented

OGIS uses the full suite of ESRI products with emphasis on the use of ArcIMS and ArcSDE to support web applications, the development of a spatial data store, and a spatial data portal.

Development Team Biography

OGIS currently consists of 10 full time professional staff devoted to coordination issues. The Office of GIS lends its expertise to other NJ State agencies to help them function smarter through GIS technology. By conducting needs assessments, recommending and often designing suitable applications, the OGIS works to increase an agencys GIS capabilities and enhance the delivery of its services to the public.
