Recognizing that not all users have the same needs, VTrans has developed maps for use by the general public, the Vermont Legislature, State and Local government and VTrans itself using both traditional methods as well as the internet.

Business Problem

VTrans has created a website called VermontRoads.com to provide the general public with current travel information. Created using ESRI’s Internet Mapping Technology, real time information about road conditions, travel delays and closures are mapped for the primary roads within Vermont.
In support of activities in the state legislature, VTrans provides maps depicting information ranging from the proposed transportation projects for the upcoming year to maps showing the relationship of projects to waterways that have been classified as impaired due to stormwater runoff. These maps are produced using ESRI cartographic tools.
VTrans utilizes the Highway Mapping System, built on ESRI technology, to maintain the official Town Highway Maps and mileage for all public roads within Vermont. In addition to the maps, a GIS layer of all the roads is produced for use by the Regional Planning Commissions, as well as the GIS user community.
GIS provides VTrans managers with information that assists in daily decision making. An Intranet site has been built that utilizes ESRI Internet mapping technology that maps daily Maintenance activities. This application allows Maintenance managers to track activities being recorded by crews in the field and view the results on a map in a web browser, in addition to traditional paper reports.

Technology Implemented

VTrans utilizes the following ESRI software; ArcIMS 3.0 for web mapping, ArcGIS 8.2, Arc/Info and ArcView 3.2a cartographic tools and is currently moving its GIS data into a Relational Data Warehouse that utilizes ArcSDE 8.2 on SQL Server 2000.

Development Team Biography

The success of GIS at VTrans is directly related to the work of a team whose members come from different divisions; this core group of users provide the direction for GIS and are responsible for many of the maps being produced. Members of this core group include Johnathan Croft, Technical Services; Steph Magnan, Project Development; Leslie Scott, Planning and Shawn Nailor, Automated Services.
