Gwinnett CountyView Photo of Award Presentation Gwinnett County, Georgia recently migrated from GDS to ESRI which has brought us closer to full deployment of an enterprise level GIS program. Our program is an excellent example of implementing a GIS across multiple departments, and external government agencies. Business Problem Gwinnett County began our GIS program in 1989 with the aquisition of GDS software, Digital VAX hardware, and several years of data complilation to create a solid basis for our program. Although, our system grew, in both data, and creation of map products, the user base remained at less that 15 active users. In 1997 the GDS company informed us that the GDS software was being removed from the market at support would eventually stop also. After evaluating several competing products we decided on ESRI software and began our migration process. Over the past 5 years we have grown from less that 15 active users to over 100. In addition to the rapid growth, we have completed a GIS Strategic Plan which will further guide our system into a fully integrated enterprise GIS progam capable of providing important information to users, citizens, and other government agencies. Currently, most cities within the county, our local board of education, and other government agencies utilize our data on a daily basis.
