Business Problem

Business oportunities often times are short lived. The member companies of MSCI require the ability to use Mississippi data to illustrate proposals and demonstration projects. Having readily available, multi-resolution remotely sensed imagery data available with vector data overlays for use in developing proof of concept projects or proposals makes member companies of MSCI more competitive within the Geo-Spatial Industry.
Developing a workforce to staff these companies requires the support of coursework and curriculum development in the University and College system. Making remotely sensed imagery and spatial data readily available for educational use in an easy to use manner helps students to understand the utility of Geo-Spatial information. Providing schools throughout Mississippi (and the United States)the opportunity to use the resources developed by MSCI plants the seeds to grow tomorrow's Geo-Spatial workforce.

Technology Implemented

Utilizing ArcIMS and ER Mapper's Image Web Server to serve data from a Windows 2000 Server creates an environment where ESRI's ArcIms 3.1 and ArcSDE can offer seamless access to professionals. ESRI's ArcGIS, Erdas Imagine 8.4, ER Mapper's Image Web Server can all access this data resource and annotate the images with the necessary GIS information. Certain tools were selected to support user needs. The geolocation tool provides real time latitude and longitude for the cursor at any location on the image. The split screen tool allows the user to assess the most suitable presentation of the data. The GIS data layers provide an opportunity to integrate ESRI products with other COTS applications. The thumb-nail download capacity is functional but in need of higher speed support or mirrored archives to provide open access to all users at all times. Stand alone products have been developed to support individual needs in data management.
