Wilson Fire and Rescue ServicesView Photo(s) of Award Presentation WF/RS has been engaged in a project to implement enterprise GIS for the Fire Services, taking the department from paper maps produced by City GIS personnel to GIS on departmental desktops and in vehicle GIS applications. Learn more about our application Business Problem One of the key challenges for Wilson Fire and Rescue Services, or any Fire Service organization, is access to accurate information in a timely fashion when the information is called for. One significant attribute of most information needed by the fire department is its spatial nature. Questions typically asked by the fire services include Where are the hazard areas? Where are the response resources? Where are the hazardous materials stored? Where will contaminants flow if there is a spill? Where are the fire hydrants with insufficient water pressure? What is the best route to use for evacuation? to name just a few. Answers to questions of this nature can most appropriately be provided by a Geographic Information System. The overall issue this project addresses is how to provide access to the information and tools required to answer these types of questions to Fire Service personnel in a manner that makes the information useful during an emergency. Technology Implemented The software backbone of the WF/RS GIS system is currently provided by ArcView 3.3 by ESRI and FireView by the Omega group. The spatial, network, and 3-D analyst extensions are utilized in conjunction with ArcView and Fireview to provide the robust analytical capabilities required to answer fire services questions. The City of Wilson GIS utilizes ArcGIS 8.3 to create and maintain the data used in the fire applications. In addition an ArcIMS application has been developed for WF/RS by IDSI inc to aid in timely reporting and tracking of hazardous materials in the community.
