Business Problem

The USGS serves the nation by providing scientific information to describe and understand the Earth; minimize loss of life and property from natural disasters; manage water, biological, energy, and mineral resources, and enhance and protect our quality of life. To achieve this goal, the USGS Energy Program generates objective science and information on the availability and quantity of worldwide resources. Understanding oil, gas, coal, and other natural resources and the impacts of developing these resources is needed for strategic planning, formulating economic and energy policies, managing Federal lands, and developing sound environmental policies.

To effectively manage these complex natural systems one must have access to reliable, documented, and timely science-based information. The Central Energy Team Data Management Project strives to increase access and timeliness to energy-related information by implementing data management principles and processes. The Project focuses on the entire data to product spectrum and addresses data quality and documentation; data organization, warehousing, and archives; process automation and workflow; systems interoperability and open standards; and expedited information and product delivery via the WWW. These tasks are accomplished by utilizing a suite of information systems, relational database management tools, documentation routines, GIS services, and web-based technologies such as ESRI’s ArcIMS.
