The Water Services Department implemented a new Map Maintenance Application that updated an existing application currently used to update water and sewer Geographic Information Systems data for the enterprise.

Business Problem

The Water Services Department is continually looking for ways to improve service to its customers. The implementation of the Water Appurtenance Validation and Editing System (WAVES) focused on two goals that we thought would improve the usefulness of GIS for the City of Phoenix. The first goal was to increase map maintenance productivity. We wanted to develop tools to help us manage and update GIS data and to keep up with the City's rapid growth. The second goal was to develop a GeoDatabase design that could be interfaced with our other business systems and to utilize network capability that is essential to water and sewer GIS systems.

Technology Implemented

The WAVES application was written in Microsoft Visual Basic and extends the functionality of ArcMap with custom tools. The data was converted from coverages and checked for quality using Dog Creek Pro before loading into SDE. The GeoDatabase design was created by altering the Visio water model created by the water/wastewater user group.
