Smithsonian InstitutionView Photo(s) of Award Presentation Smithsonian GIS projects span academic applications from Archeology to Zoology, from Earth to other planets, from membership development to facilities management, and from Paleobiology to contemporary biodiversity studies. Learn more about our application Business Problem The problems that we are trying to solve include analyses of plant and animal distributions, paleobiological landscape re-creations, proper portrayal of animating volcanoes and earthquakes over time, and comprehensive web linkage to any spatial data related to the Amazon basin. Technology Implemented We are using ArcView3.3, ArcGIS8.3, ArcIMS4.0.1, and BusinesMap3 with a a variety of PCs and servers. Development Team Biography The Smithsonian does not have a 'Development team', per se, but we do have a number of individuals who have independently led their divisions in GIS use. These people include: Daniel Cole, GIS Coordinator; Ryan Valdez, AmazonGIS Research & Education Officer; Andrew Johnston, Remote Sensing & GIS Research Specialist; Peter Leimgruber, Conservation & Resarch Center-GIS Lab Director; Paul Kimberly, Global Volcanism Program Computer Specialist; Tom Hollowell, Guianas Biodiversity GIS developer; and Donald Weller, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center Ecologist. |
