KY Natural Resource/Environmental Protection CabinetView Photo(s) of Award Presentation Project Goal
This web site was developed by a collaboration of Commonwealth and Federal agencies to provide online access to maps showing locations of coal mines in Kentucky. Two deep mine related accidents (Martin County, Kentucky waste pond spill, and the Que Creek mine flooding in Pennsylvania) provided the impetus for Kentucky to review the method providing deep coal mine information to the public. At the end of the project (2006), the goal is to have all 30,000+ underground coal mine engineering drawings scanned, geo-referenced with 24x7 availability via the world wide web. Business Problem Solved
Coal mining companies were required to annually submit mine engineering drawings for licensure to one agency and maps to show mined out areas to another agency. None of these maps were easily accessible by the public or mine engineering companies. After getting one regulation modified by the legislature, there in now one point of submittal for deep mine maps. These maps are 'checked in', tagged then scanned and geo-referenced. Once scanned they are placed in an ftp site for download on a daily basis. Technology Implemented
