Project Goal

Puerto Rico Interactivo (PRI) is a public tool of geographic analysis accessible through Internet that allows to locate and to evaluate environmental and physical characteristics of a particular place in Puerto Rico. It offers information on the associated politics of planning and land development. The PRI is comprised of three thematic maps:

• Environmental Evaluation
• Autonomous Municipalities
• Aerial Photos

Each one of these maps includes the location and historical site consultation (permit) in the Puerto Rico Planning Board. Among others the PRI offers information of topography, flora and fauna, infrastructure, zoning, land use classification and satellite images of the year 2002. The available information allows to filling interactively a Complementary Form for Environmental Evaluation. This information is vital for the site consultation process in the Island.

The PRI has a clearly organized interface, is flexible enough to run on multiple computer platforms and provides opportunities to record comments and opinions. Finally, the PRI offers a metadata records for each one of the GIS layers used and offers a help section in which the users can obtain answers to most frequent questions on the utilization of the application.

Business Problem Solved

• Problems of effort duplicity - PRI avoids duplication of efforts and misuse of resources invested in databases developed by government and private sectors.

• Inter-operability problems - PRI is flexible enough to run on multiple computers platforms.

• Problems of redundancy - PRI provides tools for databases sharing. Also it reduces uncertainty in interpretation and assures higher quality analysis, investigations and recommendations.

• PRI is especially useful in highlighting and avoiding land use conflicts and is essential for informed development planning,

• Lack of public participation problems – The PRI allows the public integration to every day decision making processes.

• Problems of localization and recognition – The PRI permit to recognized and to locate efficiently a place with the use of satellite images, previous knowledge of coordinates, identification number of the site consultation (permit) or by drawing on the map.
