Project Goal
Yakima’s GIS program features broadly distributed data and centralized maintenance of Geographic information and mapping functions for the City of Yakima. A wide variety of data layers and maps provide vital information to support Emergency Services, Public Works and Utilities, Planning and Code Enforcement and other municipal functions.

Business Problem Solved
Efficiency, accuracy and communication were the goals of implementing a municipal-wide GIS project. In 1988, the City of Yakima installed ArcInfo 4.0 and began the task of converting paper maps and records to a digital database. Core projects included street centerlines and planning level parcel maps.
As base maps and data were available, additional attributes and data layers were developed to meet the needs of the various user departments. Zoning, land use and environmental maps were developed to meet the requirements of the Washington State Growth Management Act, daily operations and public notice needs of the planning department. Utility maps were developed to share infrastructure information and plan service needs. Building permits and code enforcement efforts were converted to a digital process that relied on GIS. Vital Public Safety operations for dispatch, status and Automated Vehicle Locations were facilitated using GIS interfaces.
Transportation projects and future system needs are analyzed using a GPS travel speed study and various other data layers. Web-based interactive mapping and related services further distributes public information. The centralized system of data layer creation, editing and maintenance provides uniform and quality information to all city departments.
Technology Implemented
The City of Yakima began using GIS on a Prime computer system in 1988. We have used a wide variety of technology to implement GIS at Yakima. GIS has moved from a Prime, to Unix, to a desktop/server platforms.
Additional technologies include implementing RTK/GPS with a fixed base station for adding survey quality to GIS, using GPS for AVL and transportation applications, and moving from older data structures to geodatabases.
We have also used a variety of printing technology. Starting with a pen plotter, to electrostatic, to a high quality ink jet and color laser printers.
Development Team Biography
City of Yakima, Washington Customer# 181
GIS is centralized in our Information Systems department. We have two staff dedicated for GIS operations. GIS staff supports other City Departments with data and cartography for special project and day to day GIS/mapping activities.
