Project Goal

Our goal was to implement a successful centralized geographic information system for the City of Auburn AL.

Business Problem Solved

In the past the GIS Division for the City of Auburn was burdened with creating maps and editing all of the spatial data for the City. These two responsibilities took up the majority of the Division’s time and prevented GIS from growing within the City. The idea was to implement an Enterprise geodatabase by using ArcSDE and to enable “user editing” that allows other departments to enter data directly into the database. Layer responsibilities were assigned to each department based on the origin of the data and custom applications were created allowing employees within each department to update the data for which they are responsible. The custom applications have simplified data entry, reduced error, sped up the editing process, and saved both money and time for the City of Auburn.

As a result of the implementation of an Enterprise geodatabase the GIS Division has been able to focus on the deployment and implementation of GIS throughout the City of Auburn. This change of focus has resulted in a more accurate, reliable, and useful geographic information system for city employees and citizens while at the same time accomplishing our goal of obtaining a successful centralized GIS.
