Project Goal
DynamicCity, the architect and authority on open access fiber networks, is empowering a broad range of U.S. communities to fulfill the promise of becoming dynamic cities themselves by partnering with them and others to deliver life-enhancing, cost-effective broadband services and content.
Starting with UTOPIA, the nation’s largest municipal fiber network project, including 14 founding cities and 160,000 potential subscribers throughout Utah, DynamicCity assists communities to take control of their digital future. These community-owned fiber networks facilitate greater consumer choice along with breakthrough broadband services at significantly reduced cost, thereby helping America regain global broadband competitiveness.
The DynamicCity GIS department utilizes GIS to design, as-built and manage the UTOPIA network.

Business Problem Solved
The Utah Telecommunications Open Infrastructure Agency, a consortium of 14 cities wanted to build and maintain a ubiquitous fiber to the home network. DynamicCity was awarded the contract to manage the network. The DynamicCity GIS team built a system to manage the addresses and infrastructure of this network and provide this information to service providers and installation contractors.
Approximately 160,000 addresses in 14 Utah cities have been collected and entered into a database over the course of the project. The GIS team was also a part of an extensive feasibility study in which over 8.1 million feet of fiber optic infrastructure was designed using ArcGIS software. The core of this system is and advanced ArcSDE data model running on an Oracle database. The Operations systems all tie into the GIS system to deliver needed data and to manage and troubleshoot the network. Every part of the Outside Plant from the POP to the splices in the field is modeled using GIS.
Technology Implemented
Oracle 9i, ArcGIS 9.0, ArcSDE 9.0, ArcPAD 6.0.3, ArcPublisher, Trimble Pathfinder Office 3.0, Trimble Recon Handhelds, Trimble ProXRS receivers.
