Project Goal

The goal of the City of Long Beach GIS for the past 23 years has been to provide an enterprise GIS solution to its departments and agencies improving the way they do business and make decisions.

Business Problem Solved

Maintaining a GIS for a City the size of Long Beach, which has its own Police, Fire, Health, Harbor, Energy and Water Departments, has been a challenge and a rewarding opportunity for those involved. The City has been able to sustain and expand their GIS program for over two decades via a centralized database. GIS is now utilized by 18 different departments and contains over 225 layers of information.

This year the City will migrate to the Geodatabase environment to take advantage of the enhanced ability to integrate with other City systems such as the new Land Management, Health Information and 311 systems. It will also be expanding it access to the public via the internet. The City received an Urban Area Security Initiative grant in 2004 to help the GIS meet the needs for Homeland Security and the City’s Emergency Operation Center.

Technology Implemented

The City has been using ArcInfo 7 technology but is moving to ArcInfo 9 this year. They currently use 14 ArcInfo licenses, 125+ ArcView licenses (both 3.x and 9.x), ArcIMS, and MapObjects. GIS is integrated with the Azteca Work Order system, Tiburon Police and Fire CAD/RMS, Omega Group CrimeView software and many inhouse applications have been written for the end-user.
