Project Goal

Our goal is to build an Enterprise-GIS that will expand to support new technologies that better serve data to planning, operations, and other departments throughout the agency. We want our users to have easy to use, up-to-date, consistent data so they can perform knowledgeable analysis leading to informed decisions. Simply put, our goal is to provide our customers with better service.

Business Problem Solved

The CTA operates over 2,000 buses on 150 bus routes and 1,190 heavy-rail cars on seven rail lines. Managing such a large system can be difficult at times. GIS has helped to solve or deal with many of the issues that are encountered. These include:
1. Better distribution of information
2. Better understanding and decision-making
3. Much needed information to bus garages
4. Automated bus information systems
5. Consistent data for GIS users
6. The ability for everyone to use GIS via ArcIMS applications
7. Ridership figures are provided more quickly

Technology Implemented

Our spatial data is stored in an Oracle database, using ArcSDE, and is served to support multiple applications and many users in a variety or ways. We rely on the GIS to always provide efficient and quality data. We employ desktop GIS software ArcInfo and ArcView to handle complex analysis and graphical displays, and Intranet mapping applications using ArcIMS to demonstrate the results of simple queries.

By integrating GIS into web-based reporting tools and other software applications, we have expanded the uses of these tools, making the results more meaningful.
