Project Goal

Chevron Pipe Line Company (CPL) needed to capitalize on a strong ESRI GIS foundation and modernize GIS operations. In order to achieve this goal, CPL chose a standard data model, embarked upon a program to upgrade pipeline GIS applications, implemented web tools to provide data access across the entire organization and is in progress of integrating the GIS with critical enterprise systems.

Business Problem Solved

Selecting a Standard Database Model
CPL determined it was imperative to reduce the number of disparate databases. After careful consideration, CPL determined that adopting the PODS model offered the most cost-effective solution while still providing an open architecture for future AM/FM/GIS initiatives.

Upgrading GIS Applications
A standardized data model allowed CPL to bolt on applications that meet the pipeline business requirements. While not a painless process, we now have a working model, an active GIS and a user community that has recognized the benefits of an integrated environment.

Implementing Web Tools Across the Organization
CPL instituted three self-service web-based Pipeline Data and Map solutions that provide varying details of pipeline information.

Pipeline System Maps - is a web-based application to display and print static pipeline system maps.
PODS Browser™ - is a web-based pipeline data browser, providing pipeline data, on-line maps, alignment sheets and reports.
ArcIMS - is a web-based application for delivering dynamic maps and GIS data

Integrate the GIS with Critical Enterprise Systems
CPL has established a good foundation for future GIS growth and enterprise integration. A phased approach is being utilized to integrate systems and accomplish the vision of a true enterprise GIS at CPL.

Technology Implemented

We are currently using ArcInfo, ArcView, ArcIMS and ArcSDE. For mobile data applications we use ArcPad and Trimble TerraSync. ArcReader and ArcExplorer are used by various end users who need connectivity outside the company’s intranet. . We use various Trimble units for GPS data collection. Applications run on Window XP.
