Project Goal

Communities using conservation to manage growth must apply limited resources to the highest priority lands. Proactive land conservation can protect a community’s most cherished landscapes, a town’s drinking water supply, a region’s essential wilderness habitat, a rural area’s most productive farmland, or a city’s best opportunity for new parks.

Greenprinting is TPL’s application of Geographic Information System (GIS) modeling that helps communities, nonprofits, and public entities make informed decisions about land conservation priorities. The Greenprinting model provides a systematic approach for analyzing public access to current parks and open space. In addition, the model identifies currently unprotected areas that offer highest conservation benefit based on locally identified criteria.

Business Problem Solved

Greenprinting offers an easy to understand tool for prioritizing land acquisition. TPL relies on core ESRI GIS software – owned and used by most government agencies – which allows for easy partnerships without new software or additional expenses. The easy-to-use nature of the Greenprinting model fosters collaboration among stakeholders and provides a more objective way to consider diverse interests and community values. The model is transparent and easily updatable
