City of SparksView Photo(s) of Award Presentation Project Goal
The Geospatial Technologies (GT) Office of the City of Sparks in Nevada is an integrated enterprise-wide GIS with a strong emphasis on Utility Management. The prospect of the having utility data with accuracy levels equaling the other GIS data sets resulted in a major project to GPS the City’s utilities at the surface and gather pertinent subsurface data. As the data set has become more complete and useable, the GT Office has added the responsibility of Utility Locating through the USA North “Call Before You Dig” program. The goal of this project was to equip Utility Locators with accurate GIS data in the field and incorporate GPS for both the gathering of new data and navigating to existing locations. Business Problem Solved
The need was to have accurate and current data in the field as well as have a program for downloading new data and updating existing data. Technology Implemented
An Xplore Ruggedized tablet equipped with a GPS module and carrying our ortho-photography, parcel data, street centerline and utilities is the foundation of what is known as the Geospatial Information Transport (G.I.T.) kit. The G.I.T. kit, used in conjunction with Leica GPS allows us to reference existing data, gather new data and navigate to existing locations without returning to the office. Development Team Biography
The entire GT Office Team has been involved in the development process. |
