Library of Congress

Project Goal

The Congressional Cartography Program, a unit of the Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress, is charged with implementing the digital technologies of automated cartography and geographic analysis utilizing geographic information systems (GIS).

The Program integrates its GIS analytical functions with its full-service cartographic production facility (data acquisition, integration, analysis and cartographic design) and provides both standardized and customized maps in paper and digital form. The Congressional Cartography Program provides services exclusively to Members, Committees, and the Congressional Research Service.

Business Problem Solved

The Congressional Cartography Program is responsible for supporting all facets of legislative policy. The key to providing such support is identifying and providing spatial data to Congress in a format that allows them to understand their particular issue from a geographical perspective. Whether the format is provided as cartographic design, narrative, or derived data from GIS analysis, Members of Congress and their staff can appreciate the powerful effectiveness geospatial tools can have on their day-to-day work.

Technology Implemented

The Congressional Cartography Program uses ArcSDE/Oracle and ArcGIS to manage their spatial data resources, and ArcInfo Desktop with PLTS MPS-Atlas for front-end cartographic production.
