Project Goal

In 1998 the City of Claremont embarked on a project to bring GIS to the city. The city needed to update its tax maps, as they were around 10 years old and in need of many updates. The city was flown in April 1999 for planimmetric mapping of all visible features, and deed research was performed on every one of the 5400+ parcels in the city, so that a factual new set of tax maps could be developed.

We initially used the GIS data on our intranet as an ARCIMS application in the hope that employees would embrace GIS and want more. In 2005 we put the application on our website and the response has been tremendous.

The maps are tied to our CAMA software, and we are planning on linking the Cartegraph Asset Management data from Public Works to the map. This would allow users to see water, sewer, and storm utilities. We have scanned all of our water service tie cards and linked them to the parcels, and our future plans are to add building permits.

Business Problem Solved

Many developers and real estate professionavisit the assessors office on a daily basis keeping office staff jumping, since the inception of the web based GIS we have had a lot more time to do work and spend less time waiting on the former.

Taxpayers can also check there data and report inaccuracies that we can correct in a timely manner. This has been a huge tool for Economic Development and has led to more interest in our city from potential developers and companies looking to relocate.

Employees have come to rely on the GIS to perform their day to day tasks saving us lots of money for licensing and training, since we don't have to put ARCGIS on their desktop and train them on a much more complex software.

Technology Implemented

Airborne GPS units in the plane were used to develop both the original project in 1999 and the Ortho and Topo project in 2005.City employees collect new data with the help of Trimble Geo-XT data loggers using Terra-Sync software.
