ESRI International User Conference 2006

Project Goal

Kane County Illinois is one of the earliest GIS projects in the state of Illinois. We began our GIS journey in the DGN world in the early 1980’s. Some of you might remember this as being the time when the PC was first introduced to the world but before the World Wide Web as we know it today was born. Only recently in 2003 did we convert our files from the DGN format to ESRI’s ArcSDE format. ESRI's products such as ArcSDE, ArcIMS, ArcGIS, ArcObjects, MapObjects and the ArcReaderControl has enabled us to package our GIS for the web and the desktop. In fact today’s GIS accessibility is what those who began our GIS could only dream of back in the 1980’s.

Business Problem Solved

In 2003 in order to deal with vector file overload we worked with a local GIS company on the migration of our vector files to a centralized geodatabase located in our ITD department using Microsoft SQL server and ESRI’s ArcSDE. When the migration was complete we retired our Microstation Geographics and began to use ArcGIS for our day-to-day GIS maintenance. Because the ArcSDE/MSSQL Server model was a more efficient manner of storing spatial data and also fit the direction that our county ITD department was heading we were able to take full advantage of their complete RDBMS services including such things as backup and recovery, security, database optimization, performance tuning, scalable architecture and database administration.

Technology Implemented

Property Information Web Portal (Enterprise/ArcIMS/ArcSDE) - A data centric enterprise web application launched in 2001. It was developed using a combination of Active Server Pages and ArcIMS that integrated GIS with county traditional tables.

KaneGIS (MobileGIS/MapObjectsLT/shp) – A map centric stand alone mobile application launched in 2003. It was developed using Visual Basic and MapObjectLT and is freely distributed along with the GIS datasets to units of government.

KaneCAD (Cadastral Quality Control/ArcObjects/ArcSDE) – A custom desktop application launched in 2003. It was developed using Visual Basic and ArcObjects for use by the Cadastral Quality Control Team. This application requires a minimum of an ArcView or ArcEngine runtime license.

KaneCADr (Cadastral Viewer/ArcReaderControl/ArcSDE/shp) – A custom desktop application launched in 2004. This application was developed using Visual Basic and the ArcReaderControl Object. This map centric application was developed for users who needed an inexpensive way to access the ArcSDE layers.

KaneCADs (Cadastral Viewer/ArcGIS Server/ArcSDE/shp) – A custom web application intended to simulate the KaneCADr custom desktop application. This application is being developed using VB.NET and ArcGIS Server/ArcObjects.
