Business Problem Solved
Virtually every aspect of work undertaken in Saudi Aramco has a geographical dimension. Recognizing this, GIS technology is increasingly being embedded into and benefiting core operations of Saudi Aramco – from Exploration and Producing through to Facility Planning and Engineering, Asset Management and Industrial Security.
With a large team of experienced GIS analysts and developers, and a supportive and innovative workforce, Saudi Aramco is pushing GIS technology into new frontiers. GIS is being dynamically integrated with real-time plant monitoring systems, facility surveillance camera streams, and enterprise information systems such as ERP (SAP R/3) and Documentum. The goal is to simplify business and improve the quality and speed of decision making.
Technology Implemented
We use several ArcGIS Desktop installations (ArcInfo and ArcView) and deploy custom GIS extensions developed with ArcObjects. Most of the GIS data is stored on an ArcSDE server with Oracle and nightly batch jobs are executed to pull data out of the corporate non-spatial database and stored in the e-Map GIS database, e.g., well and rig locations.
A range of custom ArcObjects tools have been developed to support specific business needs and workflows for engineers and other staff with sophisticated GIS needs. Numerous web-based viewers have been developed with custom tools to mark-up and annotate online GIS maps and collaborate electronically.
