Project Goal
University Information Technology Services (UITS) at Indiana University is playing an important role in Indiana GIS, most notably in providing the University community, GIS professionals and the general public online access to terabytes of data via the Indiana Spatial Data Service (ISDS) and the Indiana Spatial Data Portal (ISDP). UITS's goal was to create online database and mapping services, needed by university faculty, state agencies, and Indiana counties to support environmental research, homeland security, emergency management, and other business and government applications.
In addition UITS wanted to create a data archive, the ISDP, to store Indiana’s orthophotography and other important spatial datasets for current and future generations. An objective of the UITS staff was to create a relatively simple archive interface allowing users to select files from a geographic area of interest, view file information such as size and format, and download one or more files.

Business Problem Solved
The ISDS and ISDP provide solutions to the data distribution challenge of the 2005 Indiana Digital Orthophotography Project, a first-of-its-kind data acquisition which generated more than 200,000 images totaling approximately 7.5 terabytes of high-resolution aerial photos and elevation data. The ISDS provides online database connectivity (ArcSDE) and map services (ArcIMS) which allow users to rapidly view natural color and color infrared orthophotography, and digital elevation and surface models. UITS database design and data loading process allowed users to quickly view and use completed county imagery, even as the data acquisition and quality control vendors continued to deliver data to the state over a six month period.
The ISDP serves as the state’s data archive with increasing use each month by GIS professionals and the general public. Users quickly locate and download both compressed and uncompressed images using the ISDP multi-file download tool.
Technology Implemented
The ISDS and ISDP rely on Indiana University’s high performance computing and network infrastructure, massive data storage system, and highly trained staff. Two Sun Microsystems V1280 Solaris systems, obtained by Indiana University through its relationship with Sun Microsystems as a Sun Center of Excellence, support ArcIMS and ArcSDE services.
UITS staff created the ISDP Multi-file Download Tool, a .NET application which allows end-users to select files from a geographic area of interest, view file information such as size and format, and download one or more files. A Microsoft SQL Server database stores information about each archived file. UITS staff maintains a website with supporting documentation including installation instructions for the download tool and links to IU’s Knowledge Base articles for troubleshooting download access. This documentation provides technical support and guidance to users from all levels of government, the private sector, and the general public.
