Project Goal

San Juan County New Mexico recently embarked on the reorganization of the County’s Geographic Information System (GIS). The GIS department was centralized within the Information Technology Department in 2005, enabling enhanced productivity and technological growth. Since the centralization, GIS has been able to develop an enterprise system and implement many web based GIS applications. Multiple County departments are able to more effectively harness and utilize the power of GIS!

Business Problem Solved

Departments were working well but they were all working independently. With the centralization of the GIS department and the implementation of an enterprise GIS, data redundancy has been reduced. Workflows are being stream-lined and the County is able to more effectively serve the people of San Juan County.

Technology Implemented

ArcGIS Desktop is being utilized in various departments to maintain their many datasets. Models are used to generate scripts that accomplish tasks freeing up GIS personnel.

ArcSDE (Spatial Data Engine) has revolutionized the way we do GIS at San Juan County. Centralizing all GIS data into an RDBMS has eliminated redundant data sets and allowed for more efficient workflows.

ArcIMS (Internet Mapping Service) has allowed GIS data to be made available on the Internet to additional personnel within the county as well as the public. Coupled with Geocortex IMF, these web services provide many analysis tools that allow for a very robust web mapping application, bringing GIS into peoples homes.
