Abstract An Example of Land-Use Based Traffic Forecasting using GIS Track: Implementing Survey Data in GIS Author(s): Robert Byers Hennepin County, Minnesota has implemented a unique GIS application for traffic forecasting. The application combines the County's 350,000 existing parcel land use records with national trip generation characteristics from the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE). The forecasting model produces 20-year future Average Daily Traffic projections. The modeling process employs various software tools including ArcView® by ESRI, TransCAD® by Caliper Corporation, and Excel® by Microsoft. This application provides superior model calibration results when compared to existing traffic counts. The GIS-based approach also provides significant new tools for assessing the traffic impacts of changing land development patterns and roadway system improvements.
