Accurate GPS Inventory of Water and Wastewater Systems for GIS
Track: GPS Technology
Author(s): Jack Avis

This topic will cover the use of high accuracy GPS for field collection of water and wastewater system assets. This is an actual case study within the City of Round Rock, Texas involving the field collection of water and wastewater asset features that were developed within the city's GIS. Preparation of GPS field data dictionary, inventory guidelines, and a field inventory map book were used to insure consistency in how features were located and guide the field collection process in a systematic manner. Use of high accuracy virtual reference GPS technology for collecting water and wastewater feature locations in three dimensions was beneficial in obtaining accurate positions without post-processing of GPS vectors. GPS equipment and GIS software used along with benefits gained and lessons learned from the field inventory process will also be discussed.
