Abstract The Business of Geography Track: Survey and Engineering Business Author(s): Brad McCallum GIS is a multi-disciplinary technology. 80% of business data has a geographic component. In addition to this data, the census and other 3rd party vendors supply organizations with valuable consumer behavior information which is used by these entities to make better business decisions. The GIS story for business begins in the field. Land records, census and postal geography, and over 10,000 variables are combined to create a framework of data. GIS tools interact with these data to help make businesses minimize costs, maximize investments and find the next best location among other tasks. Attendees will walk away from this presentation with a better understanding of how GIS is used in the commercial sector. This knowledge can be used to leverage an existing GIS investment by allowing business owners and consultants to examine their business needs using this technology.
