Project Goal

The Arizona Geographic Information Council (AGIC) was established by Executive Order in 1989 as Arizona's primary forum and oversight group for geographic information and technology issues and coordination efforts. The mission of AGIC is to coordinate the development and management of geographic information in Arizona. AGIC promotes the use of GIS and related technologies to address problems, develop plans, and manage the natural, economic and infrastructure resources of the state. The vision of AGIC is to facilitate the provision of credible, timely and accurate geographic information for widespread use by decision-makers and the citizens of Arizona.

Business Problem Solved

AGIC identifies standards, development and implentation strategies to provide a framework in order to optimize the State's investment in geospatial data and GI technology. Through cooperation and partnerships, AGIC facilitates the acquisition, exchange and management of geographic information and technology to benefit the State and the Arizona GIS community. AGIC meets on a reuglar basis and conducts an Annual GIS Conference to address and coordinate statewide geographic information and technology issues, requirements and solutions.

Technology Implemented

AGIC utilizes the AGIC website as its primary way for sharing information throughout the Arizona GIS community. AGIC also uses listserver technology to broadcast essential and time sensitive information and then allow for two way communications on GIS issues. AGIC also supports the AGIC Geodata Portal, the Arizona Imagery Server and the Arizona Map by coordinating closely with the State Cartographer's Office and the Arizona Land Resources Information System to provede theses, and other, services to the Arizona GIS community. AGIC has also published the MAPPING ARIZONA document that explains efforts throughout the state (and the within the council) to demonstrate uses and promote GIS within our state. This living document can be used by any member of the geospatial community to assist and/or defend GIS activity in their respective organization.

Development Team Biography

AGIC is a council comprised of 34 members, which include State and university, federal, county and municipal government, regional GIS groups, associations, and the private sector. Timothy Smothers, City of Peoria, is the current AGIC President, Kevin Blake, Yavapai County, is the President-Elect and Gary Irish, State Land Department, is the AGIC Secretary. Each officer is elected for a one year term of office. AGIC also has 4 standing committees which include the Administration and Legal, Data, Conference and Outreach committees. Committees may be chaired and comprised of non-board members. This is a way AGIC tries to include more members of the Arizona GIS community in its activities.
