Project Goal
The City of Fort Smith GIS recently completed an enterprise-wide migration to ArcGIS Server 9.2. Included in this migration was a complete re-write of its established ArcIMS-based (9.1) web portal. Beginning in September of 2007, staff from the Fort Smith GIS Department began translating some five years worth of ArcIMS code which was based on Java/JSP. Fort Smith chose ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework to leverage the experience and talent level of existing staff. The conversion was completed in March of 2008 and the new ArcGIS Server-based web portal ( http://gis.fortsmithar.gov ) went live on March 16, 2008.Business Problem Solved
The City of Fort Smith GIS serves a leadership role in a regional GIS consortium consisting of cities, towns, two counties, a chamber of commerce and a regional planning and development district. Many businesses and government organizations rely on the City to provide spatial information in a variety of methods. With ArcGIS Server, Fort Smith can provide data via a simple web browser or Server-based map services. These Server-based map services can then be consumed by those Consortium members using ArcGIS.
Technology Implemented
ArcGIS Server (Enterprise - Advanced) 9.2 for the Windows .NET Framework. The web code was written entirely in C#.
