ArcGIS

Q: What are the major themes for ArcGIS 9.4?

ArcGIS 9.4 is a comprehensive release. This release will help you get your GIS work done faster. Here are some of the highlights.

1.    Perform your ArcGIS Desktop work more efficiently

ArcGIS 9.4 delivers faster and more responsive drawing performance that speeds up your data authoring process. It also provides you with easy access to the most commonly used geoprocessing tools and lets you quickly find and use symbols and tools, significantly improving your productivity. It includes new functionality that allows you to focus on your map as you’re creating it and to continue to interact with it as geoprocessing is executed in the background, which reduces idle time.

2.    Save time on map creation and production

With ArcGIS 9.4, you can design your maps using interactive sketch and design tools. This release also includes new geoprocessing tools for multiscale map creation and supports layouts with multiple pages for the making of map books, including PDFs. You can streamline your map production workflows with dynamic layout text elements (e.g., title, date, page number, etc.), as well as map templates. These templates are for high-quality maps that are used on the desktop and Web.

At 9.4, optimized map services support cartographic representations and Maplex labeling, and the new compact cache format will facilitate the creation and management of large map caches as well as save you disk space. ArcGIS Server 9.4 enhances map production workflows over the Web via geoprocessing services and Python.

3.    Manage and create data more easily

Open API access to the file geodatabase at ArcGIS 9.4 make data management and creation easier, and a new window in ArcMap simplifies project management and collaboration. New Query Layers in ArcGIS allow you to access all data (including spatial) stored in relational databases via standard SQL.

4.    Improved 2D and 3D editing and design with desktop, mobile, and Web clients

ArcGIS 9.4 provides easier access to common editing tools in ArcMap, ArcScene, and ArcGlobe as well as new template-based editing that lets you choose from a customizable on-screen palette of features in desktop and Web clients. You also have the ability to edit the geodatabase over the Web with the new Feature Editing Service. Take advantage of a new customizable ArcGIS Mobile application for mobile and Tablet PC devices for fast field editing and on-site design work.

5.    Experience new ways to share

ArcGIS 9.4 includes a new method for sharing and collaborating on GIS projects. It also provides a tighter integration with the ArcGIS Online search and sharing application.

6.    Perform better analysis and modeling

ArcGIS 9.4 includes tools that improve the geoprocessing framework such as ModelBuilder support for undo/redo, iterators, and tooltips as well as improved map algebra with Python support. New geoprocessing tools enhance the geographic science behind ArcGIS such as Fuzzy Overlay and Fuzzy Reclassify for better site selection and suitability modeling and location/allocation modeling of network data sets. New classification tools make image collection and evaluation of training samples easier. New ecological sampling design tools accommodate user-defined spatial criteria. And new types of graphs make visualizing results more meaningful and intuitive.

7.    Improved 3D GIS environment

ArcGIS 9.4 evolves the 3D GIS environment with 3D editing and analysis in ArcScene and ArcGlobe as well as templates and best practices for creating virtual cities

8.    Create, manage, and visualize time-aware data

At ArcGIS 9.4, you can display and animate temporal datasets as well as publish and query temporal map services.

9.    Tighter integration of imagery with ArcGIS

ArcGIS 9.4 provides fast, dynamic raster display and on-the-fly processing and mosaicking. These enhancements improve your ability to integrate your imagery into your GIS for better analysis and display. ArcGIS 9.4 also provides stronger ArcGIS Web API support for advanced imagery visualization.

10. Easy to manage licenses

ArcGIS 9.4 makes it easier check out shared ArcGIS 9.4 licenses on a different computer (i.e., for field work, remote offices, etc.) for temporary use in a controlled environment.

11. Enhanced configurable Web mapping applications

ArcGIS 9.4 introduces a new out-of-the-box configurable Web mapping application for ArcGIS Server. It is built on the ArcGIS Web APIs and delivers a new modern look and rich user experience on top of powerful ArcGIS Server services. With the new Web mapping application in 9.4, non-developers will be able to create good looking, fast, scalable, and fully functional GIS applications for Web users.

12. Simplified Mobile Project Management

ArcGIS 9.4 enhances existing mobile capabilities by deploying out-of-the-box ArcGIS Mobile projects to laptops and tablet-based PCs, expanding the reach of GIS to vehicle-based workflows. The field data collection experience will be significantly improved to include streaming GPS, photo attachments, and location tracking for all ArcGIS Mobile applications. Administrators can quickly configure their mobile projects using the new Mobile Project Center to simplify the deployment of their projects. In addition, developers can easily extend mobile applications with custom tasks and data sources using the ArcGIS Mobile SDK.
