Project Goal

Central San has been using GIS technology in many forms for more than 30 years. Beginning in 2015, we set out to modernize our GIS system, make it a reliable system of record, integrate with as many business systems as possible, and provide end users with easy and real-time access to information through web maps and apps. ArcGIS Enterprise was selected to deliver that vision.

Central San modernized and consolidated other enterprise business systems, and specifically selected software and systems that would integrate with ArcGIS Enterprise.

ArcGIS Online is used for public outreach and to collaborate on projects with consultants or other agencies.

Business Problem Solved

Central San’s Operations and Maintenance departments used multiple Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and closed-circuit TV inspection (CCTV) systems, each of which contained independent asset registries. We replaced all CMMS systems with Cityworks AMS, which integrates directly with the asset registry stored in ArcGIS Enterprise. CCTV data was consolidated into ITpipes, which integrates with both ArcGIS Enterprise and Cityworks. Data from all these integrated systems are shared with our staff via web maps and dashboards.

Central San (assisted by HDR, Inc.) recently migrated sewer and recycled water systems data from the deprecated Geometric Network to the new Utility Network Solution for ArcGIS Enterprise. Dozens of attribute rules were written to improve data quality and consistency. Migration future-proofed our data, laid the foundation for an accurate and detailed Digital Twin, and moved us closer to accessing asset information in real time from any device.
