Project Goal
In 2022, The Geological Survey of Finland initiated the Geoscience Information Development Program, encompassing activities such as operational enhancement, data resource updates, and the revitalization of the geodata information system. The extensive development program is implemented not only by GTK's own experts but also through a multi-vendor model.Business Problem Solved
GTK's current geodata system in use was built between 2009 and 2015. The system was due for an upgrade with the advancement of technology to better meet current needs. Work is conducted from several different locations within the organization with120-150 active users, which imposes its own requirements. There is a lot of diverse and fragmented data, and a lot of data needs to be loaded for processing. Cloud migration was also seen as an opportunity. The new forthcoming geodata system is a dynamic entity that harnesses the strengths of various technologies and approaches simultaneously. This flexible and scalable solution leverages the benefits provided by both cloud services and on-premises solutions.
Technology Implemented
GTK's new geodata information system is a dynamic entity that harnesses the strengths of various technologies and approaches simultaneously. This flexible and scalable solution leverages the benefits provided by both cloud services and on-premises solutions. GTK, in collaboration with Esri Finland, has entered the Esri Enterprise Agreement (EA) spanning the years 2024–2028. This agreement facilitates the extensive utilization of ArcGIS software as an integral component of the revamped geodata information system. GTK aims to incorporate a multitude of off-the-shelf ArcGIS software solutions within its geodata system. The ArcGIS Field Maps mobile application, designed for fieldwork and field tasks, has been developed for collecting bedrock and soil data. The Geological Survey of Finland, GTK, engages in direct discussions with Esri Inc. regarding product development needs identified by experts in minerals, groundwater, aggregates, geothermal energy, and other geological resources.
