Project Goal
Previously, Stellenbosch University relied on an outdated system of hard copy architectural plans. The journey and transition to a more digital world in SUFM started as far back as Sept 2001. The long-term vision of a digital twin for the campus has been imbedded in the vision since 2001. The GIS has significantly improved the management of structural and spatial buildings, along with associated data attributes. Facility management professionals face daily challenges in improving campus properties and ensuring stakeholder satisfaction. To tackle the complexities of managing a university campus, the project goal is to enhance informative decision-making in facility management at Stellenbosch University by implementing a robust Geographic Information System (GIS). The GIS system enable us using technology to do more with less. This system aims to streamline operations, improve spatial management, and facilitate efficient communication across all departments.Business Problem Solved
Transitioning to GIS technology allowed for better management of structural and spatial buildings, along with associated data attributes that is in line with the Higher Education Management Information Systems (HEMIS). Additionally, the need for efficient decision-making across various departments required a comprehensive tool, which GIS provided in terms of:

•ArcGIS as a Strategic Decision-Making Tool
To determine future planning scenarios, cost-saving measures
and efficient departmental coordination of GIS data. ArcGIS empowers SUFM to harness spatial information, make informative decisions and enhance communication across environments.
•Expanding GIS Integration for Added Value
GIS plays a vital role in spatial management and reporting. The university continues to expand GIS integration to support building management systems (BMS)
Technology Implemented
Stellenbosch University initially utilized standard GIS software before transitioning to an Enterprise GIS system, specifically ArcGIS. ArcGIS provided comprehensive capabilities for spatial analysis, scenario planning, accessibility of spatial information to institutional role-players and integration with other systems such as building management systems (BMS).
Development Team Biography
The project team at Stellenbosch University Facilities Management, Sub-Department Development Planning and Design consisted of professionals with expertise in GIS, Architectural technologies, Town Planning, Facility Management, and Information Technology. GIS Team members had diverse backgrounds and experiences ensuring a holistic approach to implementing GIS solutions.
