Project Goal

Directorate General for Mapping (DGM), is by law the National Mapping Agency of Türkiye, provides geospatial data of various levels of detail, types, and scales, which form the basis of today's geospatial data infrastructure – an indispensable national asset for sustainable development of the country and many other applications. DGM is responsible for the official topographical mapping of the country in hard-copy and digital forms for military, government, administrative, educational uses.

Many map users are eager to create their own maps without depending on the standart map borders. In order to fulfill this request, we started to look for an innovative solution to provide topographic and thematic maps to the military users as instantly and up-to-date. For this purpose; we developed a web map application which is fast and user-friendly, having a simple interface, running on a web browser, without need for installation, and also able to create high-resolution and small-sized maps

Business Problem Solved

HGM-Karto is a web-based map application that allows users to create scaled maps in the selected geographical area, at the desired scale, with the desired map layers and map legend. HGM-Karto application was developed by the staff of DGM and using ESRI software components. Application is in use wherever the intranet network is available and without need for any installation.

The main capabilities of the HGM-Karto Application are as follows:

· As moving zoom in/zoom out, maps of different scales become visible,

· Basic measurement (length, area, angle) operations,

· Searching location or geographical name,

· Larger scale zoom levels include street name, POI and orthophoto,

· Corner coordinates of the map frame drawn by the user can also be altered manually,

· Hillshade layer can be included into the output map file,

· Output map files in size of 2-5 megabyte,

· Extra capabilities for registered users,

· User statistics are monitoring

Technology Implemented

ESRI products, used in map production and development of HGM-Karto Application are as follows;

ArcMap and ArcPro: It is used to create seamless digital cartographic models.

ArcGIS Server: It is used to publish topographic and thematic maps as tile files, with 20 zoom levels and different scale ranges.

ArcObjects SDK: Cartographic vector data is used as creating scaled maps. Thus, high resolution-small size maps can be obtained as .pdf format. Raster (.tiff) file of a map is 150 mb, whereas vektor (.pdf) file of the same map is 3 mb. ArcObjects SDK library is used in map creation module.
