Project Goal
At the National Archaeological Anthropological Memory Management (NAAM) ArcGIS is primarily used by the archaeology department, but it is in the process of being expanded to other departments within the organization. The main aim of heritage management in archaeology is to document, research and protect the cultural heritage of Curaçao. We use different methods and technologies to achieve this. One of the most important in our daily work is ArcGIS.Business Problem Solved
Understanding human activity in the past hinges on spatial data and ArcGIS provides tools that enable us to interpret spatial context in ways that traditional methods cannot. NAAM uses ArcGIS for the following specific purposes:
•Mapping and site recording: we can create precise digital maps of excavation sites
•Managing archaeological data: ArcGIS enables the creation of a centralized database in which different types of information can be stored, such as historical maps and LiDAR data
•Spatial analysis: this allows us to identify patterns and gain a better understanding of why past populations chose certain locations.
•Predictive modelling: ArcGIS can be used to predict the location of undiscovered archaeological sites.
•Monitoring and preservation: we can remotely monitor changes in site conditions over time, including erosion, the impact of climate change, and threats from construction or tourism.
•Visualization and communication: ArcGIS makes complex data more accessibl
Technology Implemented
We currently use a combination of ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, as well as available apps such as the 123 Survey app, on devices such as phones, to collect our field data. In the past, we used handheld devices such as the Trimble GeoXH in combination with ArcMap. We have also started using ArcGIS Storymaps to make our information more accessible and visual for the community.

NAAM is dedicated to preserving and managing the cultural heritage of Curaçao. As well as carrying out tasks related to museums, such as conserving and documenting collections, the organization focuses on identifying and protecting (endangered) heritage sites, conducting archaeological and anthropological research, and developing educational materials. Furthermore, NAAM advises the government, developers, and the community on heritage and heritage legislation, and contributes to the strengthening and preservation of the cultural heritage and identity of the Curaçaoan community.
