Project Goal
Our city is growing rapidly, and our public safety services must grow with it. This project evaluated potential sites for relocating an existing fire station and identified properties suitable for an additional station. Using Service Area Network Analysis, we mapped 4 minute response zones for each station. The network dataset was updated to incorporate more realistic turn delays for large fire trucks, as the standard 2 second delay does not accurately reflect actual turning times and can introduce error into response zone calculations. These adjusted delays provide a more accurate representation of each station’s true capabilities.Business Problem Solved
The core question was whether the fire department should renovate the existing station or relocate it. The goal was to determine whether relocation would meaningfully improve service to the community.
Technology Implemented
This project utilized Service Area Network Analysis in ArcGIS Pro to model response zones. ArcGIS Online was used for data management and sharing, and Business Analyst—specifically the Fire District Profile included with the Fire Accreditation Solution—was used to compare demographic coverage within the 4-minute response areas.

• Marion Fire Department
Firefighters conducted turn delay testing for their apparatus and provided average turn time data for various intersection types. They are a dedicated group of men and women who serve their community with professionalism and have been outstanding partners in this and many other projects.
Company Overview
The City of Marion is located in East Central Iowa and has a population of 42,784. First established in 1839, the city has continued to grow and flourish. It is currently one of the fastest growing communities in the state, and our city employees are always looking for ways to better serve our growing population through improved communication, service efficiency, and resource and data management.
Return on Investment
The return on investment is unknown at this time. The relocation has yet to be approved by council, but every effort to improve emergency response results in lives and properties saved, and that is worth the investment.
