Project Goal

The SFO GIS mission is to provide useful geospatial infrastructure information to staff, tenants, airlines, project teams, government agencies and the public. SFO has custom-built three geospatial enterprise data models to encompass airfield, interior spaces, and sub-surface utilities. The GIS information is delivered to consumers by way of custom web applications, mobile applications, system integrations, and our GIS infrastructure APIs. As the implementation of virtual design and construction (VDC) continues to expand at the Airport, we have progressively integrated Building Information Modeling (BIM) into our workflows, converting Revit models to GIS and serving them as 3D web scenes as well as GeoJSON for operational use within the enterprise.

Business Problem Solved

By creating standardized data models, as well as a proactive VDC engagement process with design and build teams, along with a comprehensive set of authoring standards for Revit and CAD, the GIS team is able to routinely accept data deliverables and convert them to GIS through a series of workbenches and scripts. The GIS team has also been able to stand up a suite of GIS infrastructure related applications, workflows for delivering data into target systems, a server data catalog and API, all of which, delivers information into the hands of our users. Using these tools, we have been able to create a system of feedback loops to report issues or update information back to the GIS team.
