City of Yankton, SD

Project Goal

The explosion of UAV popularity has made the new technology accessible and affordable and has helped cities of all sizes and budgets revolutionize their city services, streamline their city processes, and introduce new marketing opportunities. The City of Yankton wanted to take advantage of this and develop a UAV program that integrated the products seamlessly with their current GIS investment to provide the public with unique and interesting products to help showcase that the city is a wonderful place to work, live, visit, and thrive.

Business Problem Solved

The City of Yankton has been leveraging UAVs to collect imagery and elevation data to calculate flood damage and soil loss, monitor progress on construction projects around the city, monitor water tower and equipment conditions, and create promotional items that showcase our economic development sites, parks, city events, city facilities, and more.
One project of note, was documenting the City’s new, multimillion dollar aquatics facility. Throughout 2020, travelling was not recommended, but we wanted to provide the community with updates while in the comfort of their homes and keep the excitement of the facility high, so we used the UAV to capture biweekly aerial imagery and photo and video updates of the facility and deployed a StoryMap that served as the facility’s website throughout the construction process. With the stress of the past year and people being cooped up, watching the project come to life has been an interesting, shining and hopeful spot in all the dreariness.
