Project Goal

At the onset of the COVID-19 health emergency, the GIS program responded by leveraging all available GIS tools and technology required to collect, analyze, and report the data required to make reliable data-driven decisions at the highest level of state government.

Business Problem Solved

The COVID-19 Impact Analysis Dashboard enabled our agency to make critical decisions regarding staffing concerns, COVID-19 PPE and supply distribution, visitor and staff safety, as well as monitoring the impacts on revenue and expenses.

Technology Implemented

Using our existing ArcGIS infrastructure and ArcGIS Online, data was collected, processed, and disseminated through reports, visualized in maps, and analyzed through interactive dashboards, all while being managed in a centralized enterprise geodatabase.

Development Team Biography

Due to CDC guidelines at the time of dashboard development, central office staffing had been limited to essential personnel only. The COVID-19 Dashboard development team was led by the State Parks Sr. GIS Analyst, Darin Mitchell.

The initial team included the Parks Program Manager/Government Liaison, Jeff King, who provided daily information pertaining to the national impact of COVID-19 on state park systems in all 50 states and the impacts on federal recreation providers throughout Arkansas.

Park Operations Admin. Analyst, Kim Suggs, compiled daily PPE, staffing, and visitation data from each of our 52 State Parks. Marketing & Revenue Manager, Joe Jacobs, provided current and projected overnight lodging data.

Sr. GIS Analyst, Darin Mitchell, developed the geodatabase architecture, data entry interfaces, web mapping applications, interactive dashboards, and reporting and analysis applications.
