Federal Railroad Administration

Project Goal

Our goal is to support the mission of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to enable the safe, reliable, and efficient movement of people and goods for a strong America, now and in the future. FRA’s Geographic Information System (GIS) program helps the FRA accomplish its mission by maintaining important spatial data layers and conducting a wide variety of geospatial analyses to help the FRA make well informed data driven decisions.

Business Problem Solved

FRA developed and maintains the North American Rail Network (NARN) layer which accurately represents the rail infrastructure for North America. NARN is part of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) and is a National Geospatial Data Asset under the Transportation Theme. The FRA maintains the quality of the network by working directly with many stakeholders including, the Class 1 railroads, Short Line railroads, State DOTs, the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command Transportation Engineering Agency, FRA Safety Inspectors, and FRA’s Automated Track Inspection Program (ATIP). The NARN is completely routable which allows users to analyze and model freight and passenger movements.
Along with other FRA layers, has been used to support many projects, including the following:
•Reorganization of the Office and Safety
•Inspector Territories
•Analyzing and preventing trespass fatalities
•Automated Track Inspection Program
•Enforcement and Risk Modeling
