Project Goal

The goal of the National Interagency Fire Center ArcGIS Online Organization (NIFC Org) is to improve situational awareness for firefighters and operational decision making for fire managers in the United States. The NIFC Org deploys standardized hosted feature services and offline enabled, configured web maps to collect data in the field, providing near real-time incident information. The NIFC Org provides and supports a true interagency platform accessible to any fire cooperator for the purpose of mapping planned and active wildland fires throughout the country on any jurisdiction.

Business Problem Solved

The NIFC Org, which was piloted in 2014, manages and supports approximately 20,000 U.S.-based users in various capacities, from data editor to data manager, and is open to any user in the wildland fire community that supports incident planning and response. Access to near real-time incident maps on field users' mobile devices increases situational awareness, saves time and money due to less reliance on paper maps, and allows for faster public dissemination of critical fire information with public facing information apps. The NIFC Org hosts national data standards, hosted feature services, web maps, and training to meet our goals, which would not be possible if not for the true interagency nature of the NIFC Org.
